A Guide to Boston Beaches

The nice weather is upon us, and for those of you who are looking to escape Cambridge for some fun in the sun, there are a few local beaches where you can do just that without having to fight Cape Cod traffic and crowds.
Constitution Beach is a great family beach in East Boston. Recently renovated and complete with a bath house, shade shelters, guarded swimming areas, concession stands, playgrounds, and tennis courts, the area is a great place to spend an afternoon. Although the beach is far from a tropical paradise, admission is free and the beach is open from dawn to dusk. The beach is located in Orient Heights, and is accessible via the T. Blue line to Orient Heights. (617) 727-8865.
Revere Beach is America’s first public beach, and a favorite among Northern Bostonians. The crescent - shaped beach attracts a varied crowd, and the boardwalk is particularly nice for strolling, rollerblading, biking, and jogging. Revere beach is not situated upon the loveliest section of the coastline, but it certainly does the trick on a hot summer day. Even more famous than the beach is ‘Kelley’s’, the local fast - food Roast Beef joint located right on the beach. Also close to the beach is the Wonderland race track, the highly controversial greyhound racing venue. The beach is accessible via T. Blue line to Wonderland or Revere Beach stops. Parking is also available.
Crane Beach Reservation serves as both a public beach and nature reserve. With more than four miles of sandy coastline complete with grassy dunes, the beach is extremely picturesque and attracts a quarter of a million visitors each year. Although flotation devices and dogs are not allowed at the beach, visitors enjoy designated Volleyball and Frisbee areas, concession stands, bath houses, and guarded swimming areas. The area is also a popular spot for bird-watching, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, nature study, and picnicking. Located in Ipswich, the Crane Beach Reservation unfortunately is not accessible via public transportation. It is, however, only a short drive outside of the city. (978) 356-4354. Parking ranges from $5-$20. http://www.thetrustees.org/pages/294_crane_beach.cfm
