HKS vs. HBS: Strictly Bid’ness?

by Ben Reno-Weber on October 31, 2007 in Features

hbs.jpgIt was with some trepidation that I crossed the river this year as a joint-degree with HBS. HBS has a reputation that did not fill me with either confidence or excitement when walking over the bridge for my first day of orientation. What I found was that, like many stereotypes, the mythology of HBS was largely malarkey, with more than a few kernels of truth. Some myths and their realities:

The halls are paved in marble and the students are paved in Armani. Read more

HKS vs. GSD: The Unwanted Love Child

by Patrick Thrasher on October 31, 2007 in Features

park_blueprint.gifThe MPP/UP program is the unloved child of some past, regretted union between KSG and and the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). Everyone thought things would work out between the two of them, but somehow it never quite came together. Awkward silences ensued, and failed attempts to find common ground. Citing irreconcilable differences, the two have agreed to go their separate ways, with KSG taking its MPPs and the GSD its Masters in Urban Planning students (MUPs).

We few MPP/UPs trudge back and forth between them - the love children of a failed educational tryst - reminding administrators at both schools of their historical connection and scheduling nuisances they would rather forget. Read more

HKS vs. HLS: The Grass Is Always Greener

by James Ahlers on October 31, 2007 in Features

justice.jpgBeing a joint-degree student inevitably requires me to answer the question, “What is it really like over there?” The question is tricky, because comparing the schools requires me to make generalizations about the students that some of you might not appreciate. My sound-bite response has always been something like, “HLS is more intellectually rigorous and KSG is more fun.”

I know that this answer is grossly subjective if not just plain silly. Yet when asked, I feel compelled to give an answer, perhaps because the HLS part of me wants to appear smart and the KSG part of me wants to be popular. Read more

When Jefferson penned his famous 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptists elucidating the lawful ‘Separation of Church and State,’ he surely wasn’t ruminating on the layout of Harvard Yard. But decades later, maybe - just maybe - Harvard architects had Ol’ Jefferson on the mind the day they decided to build the Kennedy School and the Divinity School (HDS) on opposite ends of campus.

Darfur Divestment Faces Uphill Battle

by Nik Steinberg, Editor-in-Chief on October 31, 2007 in News

This week, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is expected to sign into law a bill that would divest the state’s $50 billion in pension funds from two dozen companies doing business in Sudan, in response to the ongoing genocide in Darfur. But as the Commonwealth joins a growing number of states, cities and universities adopting targeted divestment plans, students at Harvard have had little success in persuading the University to embrace a similar strategy.

Point/Counterpoint: Husband Hunting…

by Teal Pennebaker on October 31, 2007 in Opinion

YOU could be the one!
YOU could be the one!

Jim doesn’t give a girl much time.  Thirty seconds into my arrival at the HBS-KSG real estate mixer, he attacks.
