Resolving Kenya’s Crisis - Balance the Scales of Power
by Chris Ramezanpour on February 14, 2008 in Features
The tragedy of the current crisis has revealed a major shortcoming of Kenya’s government - the president. Whoever he is and whoever he will be.As it stands the president holds all the authority to appoint and dismiss every ministerial, provincial and administrative official in the country, without any account to Parliament. As long as there is so much power concentrated in this position, the democratic structure will be unstable.
If the political leaders can work on developing a greater balance of power across other posts and branches, while also providing for adequate representation among tribes within these leadership roles, and within senior staffing positions in each office, then the system will begin to address the fears and suspicions of so many Kenyans that they are overlooked by the government simply because they are not from the ruling party’s tribe.
