Cornflakes in Kabul

by Taufiq Rahim on March 4, 2008 in Live from Kabul

It is a rather odd twist that I met someone in Afghanistan for the first time who I already knew, who happens to be from Vancouver. Some people may know that I act as a facilitator for a program called Soliya, which is a virtual environment that brings together university students from the Middle East and the United States through interactive video-cam enabled classrooms. In any case, one of my co-facilitators I had only met virtually. Yesterday, we dined over Lebanese food as she described the ins and outs of NGO work here. Those from Lebanon, would be interested to know that the owner is from the Chouf, and makes excellent Baba Ganouj. Of course to enter the restaurant, you have to go through quite a security process, and a friendly pat-down.

It is that strange thing, that there are a number of people here from all over. Just yesterday, I met with a representative from the Asian Development Bank, who not only turned out to be Canadian, but a Kennedy School Grad (MPA ‘94). He did not call it Harvard Kennedy School, but that’s another issue for another time. Anyways, I am on my way to my Kabulian breakfast of Cornflakes. A la prochaine fois.
