40 days, 40 nights and 40 cabinet ministers

by Wangari Kebuchi on April 13, 2008 in Blog, Kenya Crisis

Moses and Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights and respectively brought us the ten commandments and the resurrection. Kibaki and Raila, about 40 days after the peace deal, brought us a beefy cabinet of 40 ministers, learning neither from Moses or Jesus, the two key lessons: i)less is more or ii)how to resist temptation.

We don’t really need 40 cabinet ministers, but all close friends and staunch supporters of Kibaki and Raila wanted a cabinet position. Which is why it is quite challenging to get the cabinet down from 40. Less would have translated into greater savings for the Kenyan taxpayer and more efficient and effective consensus building, but the political structure may have suffered from more upheavals. The temptation to make allies happy at the expense of the Kenyan public is one that is succumbed to too many a time to appall the Kenyan public. But then again the same could be said of election rigging, and look what happened.

Deputy Prime Ministers include Uhuru Kenyatta (KANU/PNU) and Musalia Mudavadi (ODM), who are also the ministers for trade and local government respectively. PNU held on strong to the jewel ministries of finance, internal security, defense, energy, and foreign affairs, while ODM got immigration, roads and public works. I am surprised that there was not more quibbling for the jewel ministries by ODM.

So Uhuru isn’t a taker for Opposition Leader……..and I’m looking for a job…….
