Going Out Guide

It’s that time of year again. Oktoberfests are in full force. Even though HKS hosted one last weekend, some people still can’t get enough German beer. Below, your guide to where you should be heading should you fall into that category.
What: The 20th Annual Harpoon Brewery’s Oktoberfest party
When: Friday, October 2nd from 5:30 PM to 11:00 PM and Saturday, October 3rd from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Where: Harpoon Brewery, 306 Northern Avenue (Boston’s Waterfront)
Cost: $20
Why: Apparently this event is a lot of fun, and rivals the Sam Adams castle beer festival. There are three areas of music, plenty of different Harpoon beers to try and even keg bowling.
What: The 30th Annual Oktoberfest in Harvard Square!
When: Sunday, October 11th from 12 PM. to 6 PM.
Where: (check the title)
Cost: Free!
Why: Lots of marching band (30 to be exact) will be parading around the Square, and lots of different beers will be featured. If you still want more music, there will be six areas of live entertainment.
Too classy for kegs and steins? Try some area wine festivals instead.
What: Boston Fall Wine Festival
When: Wednesday, October 7th, 6 PM to8 PM
Cost: $34
Why: Charlesmark Hotel on Boylston Street is serving tapas with four different wine pairings. A sommelier will be on hand to help you smoke out each flavor.
What: Blanchards [cq] Wine Expo & Wine Tasting Event
When: Wednesday, October 7th, 6 PM to8 PM
Where: 286 American Legion Hwy, Rte 60, Revere, MA
Cost: Free!
Why: The same night as the Boston Wine Festival, Blanchards, a giant distributor, holds its annual event. It might taste a little better because it’s free!
Maybe mass consumption of alcohol isn’t your thing. If you have already checked out the new espn.go.com/boston, you know the Boston Celtics and the Boston Bruins begin seasons this week. The first Celtics pre-season game is Friday, October 9th at 7:30pm against the New York Knicks and the Bruins open tomorrow night.
If you have some spare cash, check out this event put on by the Harvard Club:
What: Boston Bruins opening night with former Bruin great and Harvard Men’s Hockey Coach, Ted Donato
When: Thursday, October 1stfrom 5:30-10 PM
Where: One Federal Street, 38th Floor
Cost: $120
Why: You get to have dinner with Ted Donato, in addition to free parking and a promenade ticket to the opening game that night. Not a bad deal, especially if you like hockey and get to chat up Ted.
If sports and beer don’t appeal to you:
What: 1st Anniversary - Laughter at the end of the world
When: Wednesday, October 7th starting at 8 PM
Where: Tavern at the End of the World 108 Cambridge Street , Charlestown, MA

To be fair to those so inclined (like my wife), I should also mention that this week is Boston Fashion Week. Related events are below:

Other events you may want to check out:
What: 99th Annual Topsfield Fair
When: October 3rd through 12th from 10 AM to 10 PM daily
Where: Route 1/Boston Road, Topsfield, MA
Cost: Varies, but most under $12
Why: The fair bills itself as America’s oldest agricultural fair and features everything you might want in a fair: family rides, thrill rides, entertainment, etc. This year Jeff Corwin from Animal Planet and country singer LeAnn Rimes will be there. It’s a little over a half hour car ride to get out to the fairgrounds, but if you want to see something different, this is it.
What: The Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony
When: October 1st, 7:30 PM
Where: Harvard campus, Sanders Theatre
Cost: $34
Why: The night is a spoof of the real Nobel Prize ceremony, featuring real published research on funny topics. For instance, one winner had invented an “alarm clock that runs away and hides, repeatedly, thus ensuring that people DO get out of bed” and another conducted a study entitled the “Ovulatory Cycle Effects on Tip Earnings by Lap Dancers.” It’s all true, weird and great. This year’s theme is ‘Risk’ and features a “Win-a-Date-with-a-Nobel-Laureate” contest.
What: Boston Music Festival
When: Tuesday, October 13th through Thursday, October 22nd
Where: Six venues, TBD
