The Name Game

Elvis Presley didn’t send a telegram to friends announcing his nickname as “The King.” Wayne Gretzky never issued a press release demanding to be thereafter referred to as “The Great One.” The best nicknames appear organically.

This is precisely why our school’s artificially announced transformation to “HKS” elicits confused glances and awkward chuckles from students and staff accustomed to the natural nickname derived from the actual name of our institution, the Kennedy School of Government – KSG for short. Read more

ExecEd and Students, Together at Last

The end of February at the Kennedy School is the traditional time when first-year students worry over summer internships and graduating second-years stress endlessly over career plans.

A vast, untapped resource exists at the school, however, that could allay at least some of these anxieties - Executive Education fellows. In recent months the Office of Professional Development (OPD) and the Executive Education program have combined their efforts to link degree students with executive fellows in an attempt to pair job seeking students with job offering fellows. So far only a smattering of programs have taken place, but the joint plan is to ratchet up cooperation between the heretofore disparate program offices.

KSG Plays City Hall

Newly elected mayors from towns large and small across the nation descended on the KSG campus last week as part of a three-day seminar hosted by the IOP and the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM). In total, 23 mayors-elect joined existing executives such as Boston’s Mayor Menino, Mayor Martin Chavez of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Mayor Doug Palmer of Trenton, New Jersey for a series of panel discussions and social events designed to orient them to the challenges of assembling an administration and effective governance.

Expectations are dangerous. That’s what I learned this summer.

I expected that working in a Republican Administration would be a masochistic but necessary exercise in demonstrating my commitment to the State of California. I expected to feel awkward all summer without my copy of “Atlas Shrugged” and my pocket squares, and with an abiding belief in a strong government. As it turns out, there are a lot of smart, principled people running the State of California who care more about good ideas than political expediency.
